What We Do

We Select

Ukrainian Books

We spread knowledge about Ukraine by sharing books. Our mission is to spread awareness of Ukraine’s unique identity — cultural, literary, historical and political. We do this by choosing books about Ukraine (often by Ukrainian writers) and making a “free library” out of repurposed shoe boxes in which to house them. We then place these boxes in stores so that customers can take a book for free, and either return it or pass it on to a friend. See below for a list (constantly growing) of the books that we currently use. (If you’re interested in giving books, please see our Donate page.)

We Place Our Books

We then place our books in boxes, and leave them around stores, subways, parks, coffee shops, and other areas of NYC. Any passers-by are free to take our books and read them! Our mission is to build a “library” with various “branches” to help spread awareness about Ukraine.

Readers

Donate Their Books

We also welcome anyone to add their own books to the Free Ukraine Library. Whenever and wherever you see a box with books from the Free Ukraine Library, you are welcome to donate any books related to Ukraine or written by a Ukrainian author.
